Apple Music will put Made With AI labels on Suno tracks later this year, if labels tag them first

Apple Music will show a “Made With AI” label on music materially generated by AI platforms like Suno, starting later this year. Apple announced it in a memo to industry partners on Thursday, August 20, 2026, obtained by Music Business Worldwide.

The label makes visible a tagging system Apple has run quietly since March. Apple Music’s AI Transparency Tags let record labels and distributors flag AI use across a track, its composition, its artwork, or a music video. Until now those tags lived only inside Apple’s content delivery feed, where listeners never saw them.

Later this year, we will also make these tags visible to Apple Music users in the form of Made With AI Labels.

How Apple Music’s Made With AI labels get applied

The tagging duty sits with the supply chain. Content providers “will be required to include AI Transparency Tags in any instance where AI was used to create a material portion of the content,” Apple wrote, including “tracks that are AI-platform-generated.”

Apple defines AI-platform-generated content as “anything that is primarily derived from a generative AI service.” Suno and Udio output falls squarely inside the definition.

Apple Music runs no detection of its own for these labels. It relies on labels and distributors to declare, the same approach it took when the tags launched in March. Apple gave no detail on how the requirement gets enforced, per Digital Music News.

Why Apple Music’s approach differs from Spotify’s AI Persona badge

Spotify went the other way 9 days earlier. Its AI Persona badge, announced August 11, 2026, flags artist profiles built on AI-generated identities. Spotify said it won’t rely on self-disclosure alone and will review profiles itself.

The two systems point at different targets. Apple labels the recording. Spotify labels the artist identity, and keeps badged profiles out of editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default.

Both trace back to the RIAA and IFPI labelling standard proposed in July 2026, which asked streaming services to disclose AI use the way they disclose explicit lyrics. Suno and Deezer split on that proposal within days.

What Apple Music’s AI labels change if you release AI-assisted music

Your distributor decides whether a label appears on your release. Check whether yours passes AI Transparency Tags to Apple at all, and what it asks you to declare at upload.

Apple’s wording covers 4 surfaces: the track, the composition, the artwork, and the video. A human performance with AI artwork can carry a tag, so read the fields before you submit. The March tagging rule lays out the categories in full.

Under-declaring is the part worth watching. Apple hasn’t said what happens when a provider tags nothing, while the EU AI Act transparency rules already put watermarking duties on AI tool makers from August 2, 2026. Two systems, two enforcement points, and no shared registry between them.

Frequently asked questions

What is Apple Music's Made With AI label?

The Made With AI label is a listener-facing tag on tracks materially generated by a generative AI service. It surfaces the AI Transparency Tags record labels and distributors already submit to Apple. Apple announced it in a memo to industry partners on August 20, 2026.

When do Apple Music's Made With AI labels launch?

Apple said the labels arrive later in 2026 and gave no specific date. The underlying AI Transparency Tags have been live since March 2026, visible only inside Apple's content delivery feed rather than in the app.

Does Apple Music detect AI-generated music by itself?

No. Apple Music applies the Made With AI label based on metadata record labels and distributors submit. Apple runs no detection of its own for these labels and has not said how the requirement gets enforced.

Will Suno tracks carry a Made With AI label on Apple Music?

Only when the distributor tags them. Apple defines AI-platform-generated content as anything primarily derived from a generative AI service, which covers Suno and Udio output, but the tag has to arrive with the delivery.

How is Apple Music's Made With AI label different from Spotify's AI Persona badge?

Apple labels the recording, based on what labels and distributors declare. Spotify labels the artist profile, reviews profiles itself rather than trusting self-disclosure alone, and keeps badged artists out of recommendations by default.
