Spotify will label AI artists with an AI Persona badge and keep them out of recommendations by default

Spotify will label artist profiles built on AI-generated identities with a new AI Persona badge, the company announced on August 11, 2026. Music from badged profiles gets excluded from editorial, algorithmic, and personalized recommendations by default.

The badge tells listeners an artist’s identity “may be AI-generated and does not represent a real person.” It starts appearing in mid-September on profile banners and About sections, in Search, and on track rows across playlists.

How Spotify’s AI Persona badge works

Artists can disclose an AI Persona themselves through Spotify for Artists as of August 11. Spotify says it will not rely on self-disclosure alone: its review team will flag profiles whose name and imagery appear to represent photorealistic AI-generated identities, starting with artists above defined audience thresholds.

The two routes produce two different labels. A self-disclosed profile carries AI Persona. A profile Spotify flagged itself carries Likely AI Persona, with a note that the company reviewed the artist and believes the identity may be AI-generated. Tap the badge and you see which one applies.

Artists who get flagged are notified and can self-disclose or appeal. In the coming months, listeners will also be able to report profiles they believe are AI Personas, per TechCrunch.

Why the recommendations exclusion is the part with teeth

A label alone changes little. The recommendation exclusion changes discovery: badged profiles drop out of editorial playlists, algorithmic feeds and personalized recommendations by default, which is where fully AI-generated acts have found most of their streams. AI country acts like Breaking Rust built millions of monthly listeners largely through algorithmic placement.

The move lands after months of pressure. Fans built SoullessMusic and SlopTracker in July because Spotify would not label AI music itself, and the RIAA and IFPI proposed voluntary AI-generated and AI-assisted tags for streaming platforms the same month.

Where the AI Persona badge fits in Spotify’s 2026 identity push

Spotify frames the badge as part of its Artist Identity and Trust priority, alongside Verified by Spotify, AI Credits, SongDNA, and Artist Profile Protection. The company says hundreds of thousands of profiles are already verified, covering more than 99% of the artists listeners actively search, and tens of thousands of AI credits get submitted daily.

The gap the badge leaves open: it says nothing about how the music was made. A fully AI-generated track from a real person’s profile carries no badge, and Spotify still offers listeners no AI-music filter, a contrast Deezer’s AI toggle has made visible since spring. Disclosure of AI use in the music itself stays voluntary through AI Credits.
