AI country artist Breaking Rust hits No. 1 on Billboard with zero human involvement
Key Highlights
- Breaking Rust’s song topped Billboard chart two weeks straight
- AI artist has 2 million Spotify listeners monthly
- Experts spot AI signs like compressed audio, digital shimmer
An AI-generated country artist named Breaking Rust made history by hitting No. 1 on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart with “Walk My Walk” in November 2025. The track became the first entirely AI-created song to top a major Billboard chart. This marks a major turning point for artificial intelligence in mainstream music. Breaking Rust’s mysterious persona shows only moody cowboy images across social media. No human face or voice connects to the project.
Jason Palamara, assistant professor of Music Technology at Indiana University, told Newsweek the song shows clear AI production markers. “The audio on every track sounds compressed and still has this weird digital shimmer, especially evident in the vocals,” Palamara explained. The track credits songwriter Aubierre Rivaldo Taylor, who stays unidentified and links to a venture called “defbeatsai.” Deezer reported 18% of new music uploads are now fully AI-generated.
The success comes as platforms roll out new AI policies. Spotify announced strengthened AI protections in September 2025, including impersonation rules and music spam filters. Breaking Rust’s chart dominance suggests current detection methods don’t work well enough. The controversy echoes recent cases where AI bands have displaced real artists on streaming platforms. This raises questions about AI music copyright protection and the need for mandatory AI disclosure labels.”
