K-pop has a new boy group, and none of its 5 members exist. muuo:23 released its pre-debut digital single “NEVERTHELESS” on October 14, 2026, with AI-generated members called Taewon, Hamin, Yeonwoo, I-Hyun and Sei.
The fan reaction was fast and mostly hostile. “Hundreds and thousands of trainees waiting to debut, and they come up with AI slop, nice,” read one reply on X, quoted by IBTimes Singapore. Two weeks on, the backlash is still the story, and the Philippine Daily Inquirer covered it on Tuesday.
Who made muuo:23, and which parts of the group are AI?
muuo:23 comes from Creation Zipup, a South Korean company. The single has 2 tracks, the title track “OVERSHOOT” and “Nectar”. The music is distributed through CJ ENM, and the video went up on the YouTube channel of Stone Music Entertainment, CJ ENM’s music label.
The faces are AI. A lot of the work around them is not. Creation Zipup’s pre-debut announcement, as reported by the Korea Economic Daily, splits the credits like this:
- Music: produced by NiNE MUSIC.
- Choreography: Noh Won of 1MILLION Dance Studio made the “OVERSHOOT” routine.
- Music video: directed by Lee Yong-seok of What’s Worth Studio, with Creation Zipup’s AI team blending live-action shooting with AI visuals.
- Styling: stylist and visual director Ko Tae-woo.
- The members: 5 AI-generated digital artists, with a backstory about “observers” sent from an emotionless 23rd century to 2026.
The group also comes with an app. The muuo app has an AI chat with each member, a web novel called ORIGIN MU:O, digital photocards and fan posts. Creation Zipup says what fans like and respond to will shape what the members do next.
Why K-pop fans pushed back on muuo:23
The main complaint is about jobs. K-pop trainees spend years on singing and dance before a label debuts them, and critics on X asked why a company would launch AI idols while so many human trainees wait. Other replies were blunter: “AI but still chopped?” and “Omgggg cant wait for their disband.”
Fans also compared muuo:23 with PLAVE, the virtual group whose avatars are performed by real people in motion-capture suits, per the Inquirer. With PLAVE, there’s a person behind each character. With muuo:23, the members themselves are generated. Rolling Stone Brasil adds that some fans think the members look like idols who already exist.
muuo:23 isn’t the only AI act pushing into Asian pop this month. AI artist RŌSIEN got an SBS Inkigayo stage on October 25, and in China, AI singer Yuri got a digital ID card from Beijing.
“NEVERTHELESS” is only the pre-debut, and Creation Zipup hasn’t set a date for the full debut yet.
