Luminate will tag AI-generated songs in CONNECT with a single label, and Billboard's charts run on that data

Luminate will start flagging AI-generated songs and artists worldwide inside CONNECT, its measurement platform, and the feature reaches customers and partners later this year. The company announced the framework on August 25, 2026. Flagged songs and artist profiles get one label: “AI Generated.”

Three inputs feed it. Luminate’s own technology reads streaming data, metadata and audio fingerprints. DSPs pass along their own AI identifications through existing partnerships. And Luminate is talking to AI music companies about sending attribution data directly, as tracks are generated, before they ever reach a streaming service.

Billboard published its own AI transparency commitment the same day, saying it will identify AI use on its charts and in its editorial coverage. Silvio Pietroluongo, Billboard’s EVP of charts and data partnerships, said the company is encouraged by the new identification tools and will keep testing them. Luminate has fueled the Billboard charts for more than 30 years, which is what separates this from a streaming badge.

Attribution at the source is the strongest of the three inputs, and it still only proves one thing: the track passed through an AI platform. It doesn’t record who wrote the lyrics, whose voice sang them, or whether a person spent 40 hours arranging generated stems.

SIQA, the independent body charting AI music, splits the same field three ways instead of one: AI-Assisted at 48.4%, Human + AI Hybrid at 33.0%, Fully AI-Generated at 19.2%, across 1,551 verified tracks from 828 artists. Artists submit their own tracks and disclose how they were made, so the classification is built on what the creator declares and a human checks.

Luminate reads the file instead. A songwriter who wrote every word and used Suno to render the music, an artist who cloned only her own voice for a topline, and a 10-second prompt export all produce the same finished master. One label collects all three.

What Luminate’s AI Generated tag changes if you release AI-assisted music

The tag rides into places a Spotify badge doesn’t reach. Labels, publishers, managers and brand partners read CONNECT when they decide who to sign, license and book, and Billboard now says AI use will show up on the charts too.

This lands into a policy month that has already moved. ARIA banned wholly AI-generated recordings from the Australian charts on the same day, effective Friday. Apple Music told partners on August 20 it will show Made With AI labels, but only where labels and distributors tag tracks themselves. Spotify’s AI Persona badge marks the identity behind a profile from mid-September.

A wrong tag on a data platform is harder to catch than a wrong tag on a streaming page, because the artist is not the one reading it. False positives already have a track record here: an independent artist’s original song was flagged as AI and pulled from Apple Music and iTunes. Luminate has published no response time and no appeal standard for its review.
