A new music award wants to judge the human decisions behind AI music, and it only takes songs with an AI voice.

The Academy of Emerging Music Arts & Sciences (AEMAS) opens submissions for its first Ellison Awards on November 1, 2026. The awards include a dedicated AI Creative Direction category, and the AEMAS submissions page says every entry needs AI-generated vocals.

It costs $300 per entry, per category. Submissions close February 28, 2027, and the first ceremony is on November 13, 2027.

What the Ellison Awards’ AI Creative Direction category is meant to reward

AI Creative Direction sits in the General Field, next to Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year. Below them, AEMAS lists 28 genre awards in 9 fields, including Gospel, Country, Afrobeats, Amapiano and Jazz. Its site doesn’t list separate judging criteria for AI Creative Direction yet.

The clearest description comes from founder Shamielle Alston, in an op-ed for Hypebot on October 15, 2026. She describes 2 people.

One “can press a button and accept the first result.” The other can “write and rewrite lyrics, make decisions about structure, instrumentation, vocal character, phrasing and emotion, reject dozens of outputs, redirect the technology repeatedly, edit the result” until it sounds the way they meant it to.

“Those are not necessarily the same creative act,” Alston writes. She calls the difference human creative direction, and she tests it with questions: who made the meaningful creative decisions, who revised the work, and who can explain why it sounds the way it does.

The better the machine becomes at producing something polished, the less useful polish alone becomes as evidence of creative contribution.

Ellison Awards 2027 entry rules: AI vocals required, human vocals not eligible

Alston pitches the Ellisons as bigger than AI. “I don’t want the Ellisons to become known simply as ‘AI music awards,’” she writes. The Ellisons cover emerging music across genres, and “that includes traditional creation, independent creation, and yes, it includes a place for human directed AI creativity.”

The published entry rules are stricter. The eligibility list says “All audible vocals must be AI-generated. Human vocal performances are not eligible,” and instrumental-only recordings are out too. AEMAS’s own founder page calls the academy an institution for “AI-created and emerging-technology music.”

So if you sing your own songs and use AI for the beat, that track can’t enter. If you write the lyrics, direct an AI vocal in Suno or Udio and edit the result, that’s the workflow Alston describes in her op-ed.

Can AI music win awards? How to submit to the 2027 Ellison Awards and the Grammys

Yes, but every awards body draws the line somewhere else.

At the Ellisons, you create an AEMAS entrant account, fill in the entry and get a permanent Entry ID. AEMAS asks for:

  • the official release link and a high-quality audio file
  • the recording title, release date and primary genre
  • the names and roles of the human creative contributors
  • the primary AI tools or platforms you used

The recording must be out between January 1 and December 31, 2026, you must be 18 or older, and each recording competes in 1 genre category plus any General Field award it qualifies for. Once you submit, the entry is final.

5 judges score each eligible entry, and they get the Entry ID, not your name. In her op-ed, Alston adds that “money should never move an entry closer to an award.”

The Grammys draw the line from the other side. The 69th Grammy Awards rulebook only accepts human creators, and in a performance category the performance needs meaningful human authorship. I went through those rules in my piece on Chronixx’s call for an AI category.

SIQA’s AI Music Awards are the nearest comparison, and their first round already has nominees in 25 categories ahead of November 13, 2026 in Los Angeles.

AEMAS asks you to name every human contributor and their role, so write that list down before November 1.
