Timbaland commented on my TikTok post about this story to say he is not a closet AI producer. He’s right, and this article has been corrected. What follows is the full chain of how the claim bent, including my part in it.
Jimmy Iovine came out fully in favour of AI music tools in the New York Times interview published on August 23, 2026, alongside Dr. Dre, who confirmed in the same sitting that he uses AI. The Interscope Records co-founder said he is “very pro-AI in music creation” and added a line with no hedge in it at all: “I don’t see the downside at all.”
What Iovine actually said
Dre described his own use of the tools first, as reported by Variety: he uses AI “as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did.” Iovine picked the thread up from there.

Read it slowly and there are two claims in there. First, Timbaland uses AI, which Iovine offered as a compliment about a brilliant producer. Second, a lot of other producers use AI and stay quiet about it. Dre agreed with the second one: “They’re using it, they just don’t want to admit it.”
The word “closet” attaches to the second group. It does not attach to Timbaland, who had already been named on the other side of the sentence as someone whose use was worth pointing at.
How the story bent
The two sentences sat side by side, and one of them had a name in it. That’s all it took. Outlets fused them into a cleaner story where Iovine had outed Timbaland, and the merged version travelled faster than the transcript did.
I ran that version. My social card for this story carried the subline “HIS EXAMPLE: TIMBALAND,” and the original headline on this page said Iovine had named the least closeted producer in music as his example. Iovine never said that. The error was mine to make and mine to fix.

The “closet” point stands on its own
Strip Timbaland out and Iovine’s actual observation still holds. Producers do use these tools quietly, and the ones who get outed later pay for it. Fenix Flexin denied AI on his Billboard hit for months before the tool’s own detector identified the track. Compare that to Tyga naming Suno on his $TARFACE album before anyone asked. Same tool, two outcomes, and the difference was who wrote the sentence first.
Iovine’s other claim needs more resistance. He put the backlash down to tech companies having terrible public relations. Songwriters suing over catalogs used without a licence are not waiting on a better press release. Apple Music building “Made With AI” labels and Spotify shipping AI Persona badges are platforms responding to a rights problem, not a messaging one.
