Fenix Flexin

Fenix Flexin is a Los Angeles rapper and founding member of Shoreline Mafia whose June 2026 single “RUBBERZ” became the first known fully AI-generated song to enter a major United States chart, peaking at number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100^[1]. He denied the song was AI for two months, was dismantled in a viral technical breakdown by producer Medasin, contradicted by AI platform Treblo’s own detection tool and by its co-founder, and finally admitted on 7 August 2026 that AI had been used^[3][4][5]. His case is the clearest example to date of AI authorship established by detection rather than disclosure.

Background

Fenix Flexin was born on 11 October 1995 in Los Angeles and started rapping in 2012 alongside the musicians who would become Shoreline Mafia, meeting OhGeesy while graffitiing in the city^[2]. The group signed to Atlantic Records in 2018, released Mafia Bidness in 2020, and Fenix announced his departure that April before formally rejoining in May 2024^[2]. The Decision. Nothing in a decade of West Coast trap prepared listeners for “RUBBERZ”. Released on 5 June 2026 through Flexxd Up Ent and EMPIRE, it is a synth-pop and dance-pop record whose vocal sings in a British accent widely compared to Morrissey^[1]. Pitchfork’s Alphonse Pierre put the gap plainly on release day: it was “ridiculous that an L.A. rapper known for twerk anthems and prescription drug punchlines now suddenly is pretending he grew up getting his heart kicked in on the streets of Manchester”^[9]. That distance between artist and record is what started the questions, and the questions never stopped.

Career

2017–2020 — Shoreline Mafia

Fenix appeared on nine of twelve tracks on Shoreline Mafia’s 2017 mixtape ShorelineDoThatShit, then on the Party Pack EP and the OTXMAS mixtape in 2018, the year the group signed to Atlantic Records^[2]. He announced his exit in April 2020, after the group’s first studio album Mafia Bidness^[2].

2021–2024 — Solo mixtapes and the reunion

Three solo mixtapes followed: Fenix Flexin Vol. 1 in July 2021 with features from Drakeo the Ruler, Rob Vicious and D-Block Europe, Vol. 2 in July 2022 with no features, and Vol. 3 in December 2023 with 03 Greedo, Cypress Moreno and Rocco^[2]. He resumed performing with Shoreline Mafia in October 2023 and rejoined as a member in May 2024^[2].

June 2026 — “RUBBERZ” and the first denial

“RUBBERZ” arrived on 5 June 2026 and was an immediate hit, later called the song of the summer by multiple outlets^[1]. Suspicion arrived with it — some listeners had already flagged advance snippets^[4]. Fenix denied it flatly in the comments of an On the Radar Radio performance: “No sirrrrrrr, recorded same as all music I do! Only difference is auto-tune reverb and me using my fake uk accent lol”^[6]. Credited producer Purps on the Beat never admitted it either, arguing instead that artists should treat AI like any other tool and that Auto-Tune is basically AI^[3].

July 2026 — The Medasin teardown

On 30 July 2026, producer Medasin published a detailed Instagram breakdown arguing the track was fully generated with Treblo, the platform formerly known as Sonauto AI^[3]. His central piece of evidence came from Fenix himself: an older post in which a snippet’s filename ended in “Sonauto.mp3”^[3]. Medasin then used basic prompts on Treblo to reproduce the song’s distinctive vocal style and its improbable lyrical phrases^[3].

Within hours Fenix posted a carousel of Pro Tools sessions showing isolated stems, presented as proof of conventional recording, and DM’d Medasin directly^[3]. Medasin’s answer was that any finished song can be split into stems with a free separator, so the video proved nothing; Fenix deleted the post^[3]. Medasin closed with the argument that has outlived the news cycle: replacing “that life long meaningful journey with a 30 second prompt” produces something that “is no longer ‘art’ by definition”^[3].

August 2026 — Detection, then admission

On 1 August, The Verge published a forensic pass finding artifacts and anomalies common to AI-generated music, alongside a cover image and an EMPIRE promotional post that multiple detectors flagged as AI with over 97 percent certainty, lyrics that AI text detectors flagged as machine-written, and syncopation that forces the word “the” onto the downbeat where no human writer would put it^[7]. Early in-studio performances had already shown Fenix awkwardly lip-syncing his own single^[7].

Days later Treblo shipped a classifier that checks whether a track came from its own model, with a stated false-positive rate below one in ten thousand. Run on “RUBBERZ”, it returned “Very likely Treblo”, and the company’s co-founder said publicly that the song was generated on the platform^[4]. On 7 August, replying to a fan on Instagram, Fenix conceded — while rewriting the previous two months: “never said I didn’t use AI, i said it had nun to do w recording process. I didn’t even know what da app was till we mixed it and erbody started commenting”^[6]. He framed the technology as something you either keep up with or get left behind by^[8]. Four days after the admission, “RUBBERZ” debuted at number 2 on the SIQA Top 10 AI Songs of the Week — the first entry on that chart by a signed, touring, face-shown rapper^[12].

Artistic style and AI workflow

Fenix Flexin’s recorded identity is West Coast hip-hop and trap: hedonistic, deadpan, built for LA car speakers, and delivered in his own voice across three mixtapes and a Shoreline Mafia catalogue^[2]. “RUBBERZ” shares none of that. It is 1980s-facing synth-pop with pop-rap and new-wave edges, sung in a British accent, on themes of hedonism and heartbreak^[1].

Under the SIQA framework, classification is applied per track, and only “RUBBERZ” is classified here: Fully AI-Generated. That tier describes work where a human prompts, directs and selects without contributing an original lyric, melody or vocal source — and no such source has been demonstrated. Treblo’s own model identified the track as its output, the company’s co-founder confirmed it, Medasin regenerated its style and phrasing from prompts, and independent detectors flagged both the lyrics and the artwork^[3][4][7]. His back catalogue is not classified: it is conventional rap performed by a human.

His disclosure stance is undisclosed, then revealed — and revealed by other people. The denial ran from release in June to the admission on 7 August, through a Billboard-quoted comment, a deleted Pro Tools video, and an interview dodge in which he demonstrated his British accent rather than answer the question^[4][6]. What is still unknown is the size of his own contribution. He says AI touched only the mix; no session file, writing breakdown or pre-Treblo demo has been produced to support that.

Public image

The “RUBBERZ” case is now the reference point for a question the industry had been able to defer: what happens when an AI song succeeds commercially before anyone can prove what it is. The track charted at 58 on the Hot 100 and 90 in the UK while its origins were still contested^[1]. It was not a disclosure regime that settled it, or a streaming platform, or a label — it was a producer with a phone and the AI company’s own classifier.

The public reaction split along the same line as the wider AI debate. will.i.am called the record “dope” while saying the AI use looked obvious to him^[3]. Medasin argued the opposite case on ethics and consent, warning artists about the stigma attached to flagged releases^[3]. Fenix landed where several established artists landed in 2026 — Tyga among them — treating AI as one more studio tool and the accusation as free publicity^[8][10]. What separates his case is the two months of denial that preceded it, and the fact that the record was already a hit by the time the truth caught up.
