Yamaha’s VOCALOID7 Editor goes on sale on November 11, 2026, for $129 before tax, or 16,500 yen including tax in Japan. It’s the first new VOCALOID generation since VOCALOID6 in October 2022, and Yamaha announced it on October 9.
A voicebank made for VOCALOID7 ships the same day. Internet Co.’s VOCALOID7 Voicebank AI Megpoid, the new version of GUMI, is already on pre-order.
What is VOCALOID7, and what has Yamaha confirmed so far?
VOCALOID7 is Yamaha’s singing synthesizer, the same kind of tool as Synthesizer V from Dreamtonics. You type a melody and lyrics into the editor, pick a voicebank, and it sings them back. It doesn’t write the song for you.
Yamaha’s own announcement confirms the price, the date, a bundled voicebank called asa, and compatibility with every VOCALOID3 to VOCALOID6 voicebank. One catch: older voicebanks keep singing with the synthesis engine they were made for, so your existing library doesn’t move to the new engine. Yamaha says feature details will follow.
The best look at what’s new comes from Internet Co.’s VOCALOID7 feature page:
- A second-generation VOCALOID:AI engine (Yamaha’s AI singing tech from VOCALOID6), built to sing naturally before you touch a single parameter.
- A new Attack parameter that sharpens how each note starts without detailed tuning.
- Note timing that starts on the vowel, so you stop nudging notes by hand.
- A note pitch lock that keeps an edited pitch curve, even after you switch voicebanks.
- A character illustration shown inside the editor while you work.
What does AI Megpoid add to VOCALOID7 on launch day?
AI Megpoid is based on the voice of singer and voice actress Megumi Nakajima. That makes it an AI voice of a real, credited singer. In Japan, a Tokyo court ruled on September 30, 2026 that a person’s voice falls under the publicity right.
The new part is 8 voice types inside one voicebank: Native, Whisper, Cute, Downer, Power, Soft, Vivid and Ballade. You switch between them without swapping voicebanks, and Internet Co. posted an official demo of all 8.
Internet Co. sells it on its AI Megpoid product page as a voicebank alone or as a Starter Pack with the full VOCALOID7 Editor. Buy the voicebank alone and it runs in the free VOCALOID7 Editor Lite.
Yamaha’s VOCALOID FAN-ding voicebanks move from VOCALOID6 to VOCALOID7 as well, starting with LUCI on November 11 and Tsunose Kotone in late December.
When will Hatsune Miku V6 run on the VOCALOID7 engine?
Hatsune Miku V6 came out on April 14, 2026, less than 6 months before this announcement. It works in VOCALOID7 from day one, but with its VOCALOID6 synthesis.
Crypton Future Media says it is building VOCALOID7-compatible Japanese and English Miku V6 voicebanks with Yamaha, free for every Miku V6 owner as early as possible in 2027. A Chinese version is in the works too.
If you bought a VOCALOID6 Editor product, including the Miku V6 Starter Pack, on or after October 9, Yamaha gives you a $39 coupon that covers the launch upgrade. Bought earlier? Crypton expects you to pay for the upgrade, but is still talking to Yamaha and promises details by November 11.
That’s three different upgrade paths for the voice behind 91 Miku Expo shows, and Crypton’s 2027 date is the one to watch.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the VOCALOID7 Editor upgrade cost for VOCALOID3 to VOCALOID6 owners?
The VOCALOID7 Editor upgrade costs $69 before tax, or 8,580 yen including tax in Japan. From November 11 to December 20, 2026, Yamaha sells it for $39 (5,500 yen). You need a serial number from VOCALOID3 to VOCALOID6 or VOCALOID Editor for Cubase, and VOCALOID6 Editor Lite and VOCALO CHANGER PLUGIN don't qualify.
Is there a free version of the VOCALOID7 Editor?
Yes. Internet Co. says VOCALOID7 Editor Lite will be a free download from Yamaha's site after November 11, 2026, and it runs a voicebank such as AI Megpoid without the full editor. Editor Lite works standalone only, with no VST or AU plugin, and is limited to 2 tracks.
Which voicebanks can you use in VOCALOID7 on November 11, 2026?
Yamaha has confirmed three VOCALOID7 voicebanks for November 11, 2026: asa, bundled with the VOCALOID7 Editor, Internet Co.'s AI Megpoid, and LUCI from the VOCALOID FAN-ding project. Every VOCALOID3 to VOCALOID6 voicebank also works, using its original synthesis engine. Tsunose Kotone follows in late December.
Can VOCALOID7 AI Megpoid sing in English?
Yes. Internet Co. says VOCALOID7 AI Megpoid sings Japanese, English and Chinese, and you can mix all three languages in the lyrics of a single track. It needs either the VOCALOID7 Editor or the free VOCALOID7 Editor Lite.
