Beatport bans fully AI-generated music, and only 8% of its users want to hear it

Beatport will no longer take tracks made fully or mostly by AI. The store updated its Content Guidelines on August 12, 2026, and paired the rule with detection technology built by fraud specialist Beatdapp. Flagged uploads get withheld during ingestion and the rightsholder hears about it directly, so nothing waits for a post-release takedown.

Music made with AI assistance still gets through. Beatport accepts it as long as the finished record stays majority human-made, and tags those releases so its curation team can see what it is reviewing.

Where Beatport draws the line between AI-assisted and AI-generated

The split sits on authorship. Beatport’s content policy defines AI-assisted work as content where AI is a tool inside the creative workflow, with primary authorship and artistic control staying human. Everything past that line gets withheld.

Beatdapp has to tell those two apart, not simply spot AI. The company has run fraud detection for Beatport since 2024, and this deal points the same pipeline at AI identification across the whole catalogue.

Beatport admits the definition will move. Its terms say it “retains the right to reject or remove any Content that it suspects may be substantially AI-generated,” and the store told Digital Music News its stance on AI is “likely to evolve over time.”

There is a difference between a tool that assists human creation and a system that replaces it entirely. Beatport is built on the former.

The numbers behind the policy came from Beatport’s own DJs. 60% said they would not play AI-generated tracks in their sets, and 77% of those pointed to a preference for supporting human creators. Another 13% said they would consider it if artists and labels were paid fairly, which puts the swing vote on compensation rather than taste.

What producers using AI in their workflow now have to prove

If you use AI for stem separation, mastering, or sound design, you sit in the assisted lane and your track still ships. It carries a tag, and Beatport’s curators see it before they decide on features and charts.

The risk lands on anyone whose AI use runs heavier than they would describe out loud. “Majority human-created” has no published percentage, no test, and no appeal route named in the announcement. Detection makes the call, and you find out at ingestion.

Beatport is not the first store to move. Bandcamp banned AI-generated music in January 2026, and Boy George found out the hard way when the platform pulled a track under that rule. Deezer tags AI uploads daily, and Spotify started labelling AI personas three days before this. Beatport is the first to pair a ban with catalogue-wide detection on a store where the buyer is a working DJ picking records for a room.

Jay Ahern, chief strategy officer at the Association for Electronic Music, said the policy lines up with AFEM’s AI Principles by treating different uses of AI differently. Beatport also has a growing set of detection vendors to choose from, and picking Beatdapp keeps AI screening on the same rails already built for streaming fraud.
