OpenAI hires Patreon co-founder Sam Yam and 2 Patreon execs to build tools for creators

Patreon co-founder Sam Yam is leaving for OpenAI, and he’s taking Patreon’s head of product and head of engineering with him.

Yam announced it on X on September 22, 2026. He’ll lead a new team at OpenAI called Creator Product.

He hasn’t said what the team will build. But he did say who it’s for.

Who is Sam Yam, the Patreon co-founder joining OpenAI?

Yam co-founded Patreon with Jack Conte more than 13 years ago, according to Tubefilter. He was its president and CTO, and he led the build of the tools creators use to get paid by their fans.

That matters for music because Patreon is where a lot of musicians, podcasters and YouTubers sell monthly memberships to their audience.

• Drew Rowny, Patreon’s head of product and a former Google employee
• Shannon Ma, Patreon’s head of engineering, who came from Facebook

Both stepped down from Patreon in the past few weeks, The Next Web reported, citing The Verge.

What OpenAI’s Creator Product team could show at DevDay 2026

Yam’s only hint so far is a date. In follow-up posts he told followers to “pay attention to OpenAI DevDay next week”, as Music Ally reported.

DevDay is OpenAI’s developer event on September 29, 2026, with a livestreamed keynote. Yam also wrote “I believe human creativity is paramount”, and Music Ally suggested he may have been expecting a backlash from creators.

He’s arriving at a tricky time for OpenAI with creators. Tubefilter points to Comscore data showing ChatGPT losing US usage share to competitors, to backlash from Hollywood artists, and to OpenAI shutting down its Sora video model.

Patreon loses its co-founder, product head and engineering head at once

For Patreon, this is 3 senior exits in one go. It follows the largest layoff in the company’s history in July 2026, when it cut 20% of its staff, or 93 people, per The Next Web.

It also sits next to Patreon’s own public position on AI. CEO Jack Conte, who is also half of the band Pomplamoose, called AI training a potential “bloodbath” for creators in March 2026. In July, Patreon started blocking AI training crawlers with Cloudflare.
