Patreon stops asking and starts blocking AI training crawlers with Cloudflare
Patreon is done asking AI companies to behave. The membership platform announced on July 17, 2026 it now blocks AI training crawlers across the site using Cloudflare’s AI Crawl Control, replacing the robots.txt honor system with enforcement at the network level.
The receipts came with the announcement. During testing, individual AI training crawlers went from thousands of access attempts per week to zero. Those bots had been reading Patreon’s robots.txt requests and scraping anyway.

Patreon has run scraping deterrents since 2023, back when the paywall itself shielded most creator work. Its newer free surfaces changed the math: posts in the redesigned Home feed and Quips live outside the paywall, so the company wanted protections traveling with the content. “Consent shouldn’t depend on whether a scraper chooses to behave,” the announcement puts it.
One carve-out matters. Patreon says bots indexing pages to send users back to the platform stay allowed, as TechCrunch reports. The wall is aimed at training harvesters, the same kind of collection the Suno scraping hack exposed across music platforms.
On most of the Internet, creators have to accept AI training on their work just to reach and grow an audience. Patreon has a different vision: creators should be able to grow their audience and control how their work is used.

If you run a membership with demos, stems, or session breakdowns, your free promotional posts now get the same scraping protection as your paywalled work. Patreon CEO Jack Conte has called AI training on creator work a “bloodbath” for creators, and this is the first time the platform’s position comes with a working off switch.
The open question is discovery. Fans increasingly find creators through AI assistants, and the music industry is moving the opposite direction, with platforms like OpenStage and Viberate launching MCP servers so AI tools can read their data on purpose.
