Fred again.. says the opposite of AI music isn't human music, it's making music

Fred again.. built his Actual Life records out of voice memos and found sound. On September 25, 2026, he posted one of his own, a note he wrote close to a year ago in his phone’s Notes app, and it was about AI.

Across 4 Instagram Stories, reported by DJ Mag, the British producer said he has felt “no pull whatsoever” to even try AI music. He didn’t mention copyright or money. He said making the music is the part he loves.

Fred again.. opened by saying he wrote the note a year ago and feels it “more than ever”. Then he reframed the whole debate in 2 lines: “I’ve been thinking for a while, the opposite of AI music maybe isn’t human music. It’s making music.”

He called the process of chasing an idea his “meditation” and his “daily compass”, and said he places so much of his identity in it that he has never felt the need to hand it over. “Giving the process bit to a machine would be intrinsically contrary to what I love about the whole thing,” he wrote.

The clumsy dedicated tumbling towards an idea is the thing we are most lucky to get to do; the hours and hours, and years and years, of endlessly trying to make the thing you wish could exist.

He closed on the line that tells you where he actually sits: “There are lots of things I’m worried about AI threatening, but that will never be one.” So he is worried about AI. He just doesn’t think it can take the process away from anyone who wants to keep it.

Fred again..‘s AI objection is about process, like Thomas Bangalter’s

Most artists who have spoken up this year argued about rights. SZA went after training on her catalogue, and Sting told the BBC his worry is the labour economy. Fred again.. mentioned neither.

His argument sits right next to Thomas Bangalter’s rejection of prompting, and the 2 have played back-to-back DJ sets together. Bangalter’s point, like Fred’s, is that he wants to make the thing himself. DJ Mag also puts Skrillex in the group of producers who have spoken publicly about their reservations. On the other side, Luke Steele of Empire of the Sun calls AI a really smart guitar pedal.

He has more reason than most to have thought about this. In 2025, e.motion’s AI-generated track “Somebody Else” went viral, and fans guessed the voices were Lily Allen and Fred again... People were guessing his voice was on an AI track long before he said a word about AI.
