Instagram can now make a song for you inside your DMs. A new Create a song option in the chat menu turns a few words into an AI track you can send to a friend, and it runs on Meta AI.
Creator Jonah Manzano posted the first screenshots, and Social Media Today reported the feature on October 4, 2026. Social Samosa followed on October 5.
That puts AI song generation in front of Instagram’s whole messaging audience, one tap away from a normal chat.
How Instagram’s Create a song works in DMs
You open a chat and tap the menu at the right end of the message bar. The list shows Saved, AI images, Meta AI and the new Create a song.
Tapping it opens an intro card with the headline “Make your words sing.” The card explains the whole feature in one line.
Type a few words, pick a style, then create a song to send to friends.
Under that sits the part worth reading twice: “By using Meta AI, you agree to the AI terms. Your interactions with AIs will be used to improve AI at Meta.” So whatever you type in there is training material for Meta.
From there, Social Media Today says you add your lyrics, choose a music genre and generate the track. I’ve written up the full flow in how to make an AI song in Instagram DMs.
Instagram’s Create a song vs Snapchat’s Chat to Song
Snapchat got here 2 weeks earlier. Snap launched Chat to Song on September 21, 2026, and it only works for paying Lens+ subscribers.
The 2 work differently:
- Snapchat takes a message that already exists in your chat and turns it into lyrics. You pick Hip Hop, Rock, Country, EDM or Pop.
- Instagram lets you type your own words first, then pick a style. Social Samosa calls that more lyric control than Snap gives you.
- Neither company has named the model behind the songs.
That last point is the one I’d watch. Meta has an open-source music model of its own in MusicGen, but nothing ties it to this feature, and Meta hasn’t said what the Create a song model was trained on.
What Meta hasn’t said about Instagram’s AI song creator
I couldn’t find an announcement from Meta. Everything public so far comes from screenshots and the 2 write-ups above.
So a few basic questions are still open:
- Which model makes the songs, and what it was trained on.
- Whether Meta’s music licences with labels and publishers cover AI-generated tracks.
- Who can use it, in which countries, and whether it stays free.
- What you can do with the song besides sending it in a DM.
Social Media Today’s Andrew Hutchinson put it bluntly: Meta keeps calling AI world-changing, and users keep getting “frivolous functions like this.”
For musicians, this is a toy for birthday songs and inside jokes, and it’s going to be a very popular one. The interesting part comes later, when millions of people who never touched Suno have made their first AI song in a chat window.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Create a song option in Instagram DMs?
It sits in the menu that opens from the right end of the message bar inside a chat. In the screenshots creator Jonah Manzano posted, Create a song is listed under Saved, AI images and Meta AI.
Does Meta use what you type into Instagram's Create a song feature to train its AI?
The intro card says so. It reads that by using Meta AI you agree to the AI terms, and that your interactions with AIs will be used to improve AI at Meta.
Is Instagram's Create a song feature free?
Nothing in the screenshots or the reports mentions a price, and the intro card only shows a Try it button. Meta hasn't published any pricing for it. Snapchat's similar Chat to Song feature is limited to paying Lens+ subscribers.
Which AI model does Instagram use to make songs in DMs?
Meta hasn't said. The feature runs under the Meta AI name, but there is no public detail on the music model, its training data or its licences.
