Apple puts always-on Shazam on the wrist with Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch Series 12

Apple announced Audio Intelligence on September 9, 2026, and buried inside it is a change to how people find out what song is playing. On Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, Shazam now runs passively. The watch listens through its microphone, recognises the track, and puts the title and artist on the Music Recognition widget in the Smart Stack. The wearer taps nothing.

What Apple’s Audio Intelligence adds to Apple Watch Series 12

Audio Intelligence is a bundle, and music recognition is the smallest piece of it. Sound Recognition alerts wearers who are deaf or hard of hearing to sirens, alarms, doorbells or a baby crying. Live Rewind shows the last 15 seconds of a conversation as text after a double press of the Digital Crown. Siri Recap writes a title and key points after a conversation ends. Shazam handles the music.

Apple’s own framing of the Shazam behaviour is precise about the missing step.

Music Recognition with Shazam automatically detects the song playing in the background and displays the title and artist name in the Smart Stack, all without tapping the widget.

Automatic Shazam tagging has existed in the mobile app for over a decade, as Music Ally’s Stuart Dredge pointed out. Moving it onto a device that is already strapped to the wearer all day is the new part. Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399 in the US and lands in stores on September 18, 2026, though Apple says the Audio Intelligence features arrive later in the year.

How Apple answers the privacy question about a listening watch

A watch with an open microphone raises obvious questions, and Apple went at them directly rather than waiting. It says Audio Intelligence creates no recordings and stores none, and that raw audio stays inaccessible to the operating system, to apps, to the wearer and to Apple itself.

The mechanism it credits is a piece of silicon. The S11 chip includes Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment that processes audio away from the rest of the system and then deletes it. Apple also says the features do not identify or attribute speakers, and it published a separate privacy document covering the lot. Whether that satisfies regulators is a different question, and one I can’t answer from a press release.

Why passive Shazam on Apple Watch changes how a song gets found

Shazam has always required intent. Someone hears your track in a shop, a bar, a gym, decides they care enough, digs out a phone, opens an app, holds it up. Every one of those steps loses people. A wrist that tags the song by default removes all of them.

That widens the top of the funnel for any track playing in a physical room, which mostly means sync placements, radio, venue playlists and support slots. It does nothing for a track that never gets played out loud. The gap between music heard in public and music that only exists on a streaming profile gets a little wider.

Two things about your metadata do more work under this than they did before: the artist name that shows on the widget has to be the one people can then search, and the release has to be findable when they look. I wrote about the same failure mode in Anghami and Cyanite’s AI metadata deal, where recognition systems trained on the wrong data simply miss the song.

Apple has not said whether Audio Intelligence reaches the EU at launch.

Frequently asked questions

What is Apple's Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch Series 12?

Audio Intelligence is a set of four features that use the Apple Watch microphone and the S11 chip. They are Sound Recognition for alarms and doorbells, Live Rewind for the last 15 seconds of a conversation, Siri Recap for conversation summaries, and Shazam for music recognition. Apple says the features arrive later in 2026.

How does Shazam work on Apple Watch Series 12 without tapping?

The watch listens to the surrounding environment through its built-in microphone and detects music playing nearby. When it recognises a track it displays the song title and artist name on the Music Recognition widget in the Smart Stack, so the wearer can glance at it rather than opening an app or pressing a button.

Does Apple store the audio the Apple Watch listens to?

Apple says Audio Intelligence does not create or store audio recordings, and that raw audio is inaccessible to the operating system, to apps, to the wearer and to Apple. It attributes this to Secure Exclave, a hardware-isolated compartment in the S11 chip that processes audio separately from the rest of the system and then deletes it.

Which Apple Watch models get Audio Intelligence?

Audio Intelligence requires Apple Watch Series 12 or Apple Watch Ultra 4. Both were announced on September 9, 2026, with Apple Watch Series 12 starting at $399 in the US and reaching stores on September 18, 2026.
