What is Music Biz?
The annual conference of the Music Business Association, and the most commercially focused event on the US calendar.
- Around 2,000 people over four days, small enough that you can actually reach the room.
- A programme built around distribution, royalties, data and the machinery that moves money through the industry.
- It moves city each year. The 2027 edition runs 17-20 May at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, after Atlanta in 2026.
- The Bizzy Awards run during the week, giving the evenings a centre of gravity.
What kind of room is it?
Look at who sponsors it and the audience becomes obvious.
- The 2026 edition carried Spotify as diamond sponsor, with Amazon Music, AWS, Believe and TuneCore, Downtown, Genius, KOSIGN, SoundExchange, Symphonic and Vevo alongside.
- That is the distribution and platform layer of the industry, and it is who you meet.
- Not A&R, not producers, not gear. People who run catalogues, move metadata, collect royalties and sell services to the companies that do.
Does membership actually save you money?
Yes, and most people never check whether they already have it.
- Registration is open to anyone — membership is not a gate, it is a discount.
- Membership sits at company level, not individual. When a company joins, every employee gets member benefits including the lower conference rate.
- So the question is not whether you are a member. It is whether your employer already is, and a lot of people pay full price without asking.
- 2027 registration figures were not published when this page went up. Music Biz announced venue and dates first.
Who should actually book this trip?
Book it if you are:
- Running a label, a distribution business or a publishing catalogue. This is the most efficient four days in the year for that job.
- A service provider or music-tech company selling into the industry. The buyers are all in the building, and at 2,000 people you can reach them — unlike at a 300,000-person festival.
- An artist who operates as a business, running your own releases, label or catalogue. The royalty and data sessions will tell you where your money leaks.
Skip it if you are:
- Hoping to perform or meet A&R. There are no showcases at Music Biz and that is by design. For showcases, Indie Week or SXSW.
- Focused on the independent label sector. A2IM Indie Week covers similar ground with a narrower and arguably more useful room.
- Early enough that you have no catalogue or business to run. Most of the value here compounds off things you already own.
How much AI is on the programme?
Central for two editions running, though it is not organised as a track.
- At the 2026 edition AI was the conversation. The recurring question was not whether the industry uses AI but where it draws the line between acceptable and unacceptable uses — training data, disclosure, fraud, and what counts as an artist.
- The 2027 framing carries it forward, describing the year ahead in terms of “the rapid adoption of new AI tech tools” and finding “new solutions to combat music fraud”.
- Those two are the same problem from different ends. TikTok’s SoundOn deal with ACRCloud makes distributors the gatekeepers of AI music fraud detection — if detection is pushed down to the distribution layer, the people in this room are the ones who operate it.
- The association runs AI commentary year-round through its Keeping Tempo series, not only at the conference.
- Rated some rather than a track, because no named AI stream appears on either published programme. That is a rubric call, not a comment on volume.
What you will not get here is hands-on tooling. This is AI as a commercial, legal and fraud problem, discussed by the people whose balance sheets it lands on.
What does it actually look like?
Where is it, and can you walk between venues?
Hilton San Diego Bayfront, San Diego, California, USA Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Get directions →- The conference lives in one hotel. The 2027 edition is at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, so there is no cross-city travel between sessions.
- It moves city every year. Atlanta in 2026, San Diego in 2027 — never assume last year's logistics carry over.
- San Diego International (SAN) is about 10 minutes from the bayfront, one of the shortest airport transfers on this list.
- The Gaslamp Quarter is walkable from the venue, which is where most of the after-hours conversations end up.
When are the next editions?
AI dominated the conversation, specifically the question of where the industry draws the line between acceptable and unacceptable uses.
Common questions
When and where is Music Biz 2027?
17 to 20 May 2027 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront in San Diego, California. It moves city each year: the 2026 edition ran in Atlanta, and Nashville has hosted it repeatedly in the past.
Who runs the Music Biz conference?
The Music Business Association, a US trade body for the commercial side of the industry. The conference is its annual gathering and it also hands out the Bizzy Awards there.
Do you need to be a member to attend Music Biz?
No, registration is open to anyone. Members pay a lower rate, and membership is held at company level rather than individually, so if your employer is a member then you already qualify for the member price.
Who actually attends Music Biz?
Around 2,000 people, weighted heavily towards labels, distributors, publishers, DSPs and the technology and service companies selling into them. Sponsors in 2026 included Spotify, Amazon Music, AWS, Believe, TuneCore, Downtown, SoundExchange and Symphonic, which tells you the room.
Is Music Biz useful for an independent artist?
Less than it looks. This is a business-to-business conference about distribution, data, royalties and commerce, not a place to be discovered or to play. It is genuinely useful if you run your own label or releases as a business and want to understand the pipes.
