What SXSW offers

Checked against the published programme. Struck-through items are confirmed absent, not merely unlisted.

  • Conference sessions
  • Showcases you can apply for
  • Trade show floor
  • Structured 1:1 meetings

What is SXSW?

The largest single gathering in the music industry calendar, and the hardest to do well.

  • Seven days in Austin every March, with hundreds of showcases across the city’s venues.
  • A conference programme running alongside with over 100 music sessions.
  • Four events sharing one city — music, film, comedy, and the interactive and technology programme.
  • That last point matters more than it sounds: the AI conversation at SXSW mostly happens on the tech side of the building, not the music side.

What does a music badge actually get you?

More than the showcases — and the overlooked parts are often the valuable ones.

  • Music conference sessions and the showcases, which is what people expect.
  • Mentor sessions, meet-ups and demo listening sessions — one-on-one time with people who are hard to reach any other way. This is the part most people underuse.
  • Keynotes, the SXSW Expos and comedy showcases, plus secondary access to most film and interactive programming.
  • Tiers run from Music at the bottom to Platinum, which covers everything.

On price, SXSW is deliberately awkward. There is no static price list — you go through the cart to see the current number, and it rises in tiers as March approaches. SXSW advertises savings of up to $345 for buying early, which tells you how wide the swing is. For scale, a standard Music badge was $945 in 2024.

The badge is the cheap part of SXSW. Flights and seven nights in Austin cost multiples of it.

Can you do SXSW without a badge?

Partly, and a lot of people do — but you need to know exactly what you lose.

  • An enormous unofficial programme runs alongside the official one — brand activations, label parties, day shows, house shows.
  • Much of it is free. Some needs an RSVP weeks ahead, and some of the best-known artists in any given year play these rather than official showcases.
  • What you cannot get without a badge: the conference. No sessions, no mentor meetings, no demo listening, no priority entry when a venue hits capacity.

If you are going for the music, unofficial SXSW is viable. If you are going for the business, it is not.

Who should actually book this trip?

Book it if you are:

  • An artist who already has meetings to take. SXSW rewards preparation brutally — someone arriving with fifteen confirmed conversations has a different week from someone hoping to be discovered.
  • A label, publisher or manager. Everyone you need is inside a two-mile radius for a week. That is the entire argument for the trip.
  • Selling into the industry. The buyers are here, though competition for attention is fierce and a lot of dealmaking lands in the unofficial programme.

Skip it if you are:

  • A producer or engineer wanting hands-on time with hardware. The NAMM Show is the better trip. SXSW is about people and rights, not gear.
  • Working to one conference budget with a specific goal. A targeted event does more for less — Music Biz for commerce and distribution, Music Tectonics for music tech.

How do showcase applications work?

Applications open the summer before, and most applicants are turned down.

  • Apply in the summer for the following March. Acceptance is competitive and the rejection rate is high.
  • A showcase slot is a slot, not a tour budget. Artists routinely spend thousands to play twenty-five minutes.
  • The ones who make it pay off treat the showcase as the anchor for a week of meetings rather than the point of the trip.

Plan the week backwards from who you want to meet. The showcase is the excuse to be there.

How much AI is on the programme?

Heavily — but the strongest material is not on the music badge's home track.

  • AI ran through the 2026 conference at every level, from “Humanoid Robots Are Clocking In” and “Build the Future” in the technology programme to the music-business sessions circling rights and royalties.
  • Spotify co-CEO Gustav Söderström used SXSW 2026 to lay out the company’s AI ambitions, in a session that drew attention as much for what Spotify would not say about its own training data as for what it announced.
  • Mark Cuban told the same edition that music is the worst industry to invest in, then gave independent artists three ways to beat those odds.
  • Read the schedule across the whole conference, not just the music tab. The strongest AI programming often sits in the interactive and technology sessions.

SXSW is where the AI conversation about music happens at platform and policy level. If you want to know what Spotify, the majors and the investors think AI does to your income, this is the room. If you want to put your hands on the tools, The NAMM Show is the trip.

What does it actually look like?

Where is it, and can you walk between venues?

  • There is no longer one anchor building. The Austin Convention Center is closed for a multi-year redevelopment, so programming is spread across downtown venues. Read venue names carefully.
  • Budget more walking time than the schedule implies. Sessions that look back-to-back on the grid can be fifteen minutes apart on foot.
  • Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is about 20 minutes from downtown outside festival traffic, considerably longer during it.
  • Accommodation is the real cost. Seven nights in Austin during the one week the whole city is full will cost multiples of the badge.

Seven days and nights. Badges went on sale in August 2026 and the earliest tier is the cheapest of the season. Over 100 music conference sessions plus hundreds of showcases. Common questions

What does SXSW stand for?

South by Southwest. It started as a music festival in Austin in 1987 and grew to cover film, technology, education and comedy. The music side is still called the SXSW Music Festival & Conference.

When is SXSW 2027?

SXSW 2027 runs 15 to 21 March 2027 in Austin, Texas, across seven days and nights. SXSW lands in March every year.

How long is SXSW?

Seven days and nights. SXSW 2027 opens Monday 15 March and ends Sunday 21 March. It used to run longer, and 2026 was the first year on the condensed seven-day schedule.

How many people attend SXSW?

Around 309,300 attended in 2025, and organisers said 2026 held roughly steady. Music attendance specifically rose about 20% in 2026 despite the shorter schedule. Most of that number is spread across the film, technology and comedy programmes, not the music side alone.

Why is SXSW a big deal?

Because it puts the whole industry in one walkable city for a week. For music specifically, the value is density: labels, publishers, agents, press and platforms are all in Austin at once, which no other single event achieves. It is also where a lot of technology gets its first mainstream showing.

How much does a SXSW music badge cost?

SXSW does not publish a static price list, so you have to go through the cart to see the current figure. Pricing is tiered and rises as March approaches, and SXSW advertises savings of up to $345 for buying early. For scale, a standard Music badge was $945 in 2024.

Can you go to SXSW without a badge?

Yes, partly. A large unofficial programme of free events runs alongside SXSW, and some official showcases admit wristband holders and the public when there is capacity. What a badge buys is the conference sessions, priority entry and the networking programme.

Why are artists pulling out of SXSW?

There have been two separate waves. In 2024 a number of artists withdrew from SXSW in Austin over the US Army's role as a sponsor and the event's defence-industry ties; SXSW ended that sponsorship arrangement afterwards. More recently, artists withdrew from SXSW London over unannounced panel appearances by Tony Blair and David Cameron. Both were about who SXSW platforms and takes money from rather than about the music programme.

How do artists apply to play SXSW?

Through the official showcase application, which opens in the summer for the following March. Acceptance is competitive and selected artists are offered a showcase slot rather than a fee that covers a trip to Austin.

Is SXSW worth it for an independent artist?

It depends what you want from it. As a place to meet people across the whole industry in one week it is unmatched. As a discovery play it is crowded, expensive and easy to get lost in. Go with meetings already booked, not with the hope of being spotted.
