There is one small comic detail on the record. Meta executives promoting the launch this week kept accidentally tagging @museband, sending traffic to the rock band they had just replaced.

Why fans read a negotiated swap as a takeover anyway

Digital Music News quoted one reply reading “Wouldn’t be like an AI company to take something and repurpose it as their own,” and another: “Great knowing that your branding means nothing to social media companies who can and will just steal your name online for pet projects.”

Both reactions are about a pattern rather than this transaction. The complaint lands because the specific thing at stake, an artist’s name on a platform, is the one asset an artist assumes is theirs by default. A handle is not owned. It is licensed by the platform, revocable under terms the artist never negotiated, and worth whatever the platform decides it is worth on the day someone inside wants it.

What an artist can control when a platform wants their name

A registered mark gives you a claim that exists outside Instagram’s terms of service. A handle gives you a URL until it doesn’t.

The practical version for a working artist is duller than a lawsuit. Own the domain. Run the mailing list. Make sure the name people search finds you through something you control, so that a handle change costs you a redirect rather than an audience. Muse could absorb this because 2.7 million people will find them at @museband within a day.

An act with 3,000 followers and no list would not get that day.
