Universal Music Group made headlines by pulling its catalog from TikTok over lack of AI protections for artists, sparking debate on how the industry will handle growing AI issues.

Key Highlights:

  • Universal Music Group teams up with Liquidax Capital to file 15 AI music patents
  • Two patents already approved, including a detailed AI music generation system
  • New company Music IP Holdings will license these technologies worldwide

Universal Music Group just partnered with patent firm Liquidax Capital to file 15 music AI patents. This is the biggest step the major label has taken into artificial intelligence intellectual property. Two applications got approved already, with one describing a 41-page system for making “AI-generated music derivative works”.

The partnership created Music IP Holdings, Inc., which will “license the AI patents and other technologies developed with UMG into the global marketplace”Liquidax founder Daniel Drolet is the main inventor listed on applications that cover AI threat protection, multimedia content, and rights management.

This patent strategy puts UMG in position to make money from AI music technology instead of just fighting against it. One Liquidax executive says they have experience “generating over $1 billion in licensing revenue,” which shows they have big commercial plans for this partnership.
