Grimes’ new music video does use AI. Her representative confirmed to Business Insider on October 13, 2026 that the “Accelerando” video includes some AI-generated elements, after days of fans asking exactly that.

The song itself is AI-free. No AI was used to record “Accelerando” or its vocals, her spokesperson said, and more than 70 people worked on the video.

How much AI is in Grimes’ ‘Accelerando’ video?

Fans started the question. “Are we tripping or does this look like AI CGI for you too?” one asked in a Grimes subreddit thread, and the top reply pointed at the credits, which list at least 3 “AI artists.”

Her team’s answer to Business Insider splits the work in two. The live-action scenes were “filmed entirely against a blue screen, featuring real performers, physical elements, and practical ground textures,” with standard tools like CGI on top. AI was “selectively incorporated as a supplementary tool within this much larger, artist-driven VFX pipeline, rather than serving as a replacement for the creative or technical work.”

Asked what exactly the credited AI artists contributed, the spokesperson pushed back on the framing instead.

Reducing months of work by such a talented group of creatives to a minor complementary production tool that still required substantial human creativity to bring to fruition not only discredits the artists behind it, but creates a trivial narrative that misses the real story entirely.

What Grimes has said about AI on Psy Opera so far

“Accelerando” is the first single from Psy Opera, an album about AI that Grimes says she made without generative AI. My piece on the single’s release has the full background.

Her own account so far has 3 parts:

  • On stage with Fortune in June, she said AI didn’t create music for the album.
  • On X on October 9, she said the one exception is the song “Deepseek”, which “contains opinions and lyrics from Deepseek.”
  • The trailer, Eve Is Online…, came from what she called a 70-person team working over many months.

She has also said she pulled AI dancers from a planned video because dancing is “a fundamental human mode of expression.” The “Accelerando” crew includes real dancers and a choreographer, and her team places the AI in the effects work.

Psy Opera still has no release date. If you’re weighing AI for a video of your own, my AI music video generator roundup covers the tools behind this kind of work.
