Universal Music partners with SoundLabs to offer AI vocal modeling tools, allowing artists like Jon Bon Jovi to transform voices ethically.

Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s largest music company, has announced a strategic partnership with SoundLabs, an AI music technology startup, to offer responsibly trained AI vocal modeling tools to its artists.

Imagine if Bon Jovi decided to leverage this technology for their next release – the iconic voice of Jon Bon Jovi could be cloned and transformed in unprecedented ways.

A young woman with curly hair tied up in a messy bun is singing into a large microphone in a recording studio. She is wearing a white spaghetti-strap top and looking intently at the camera. The background shows wooden walls, soundproofing panels, a window with sunlight streaming through, and framed pictures on the walls.

Everything you need to know:

✓ AI voice-to-voice, voice-to-instrument transformations

✓ Speech-to-singing, language transposition capabilities

✓ Exclusive access for UMG artists like Jon Bon Jovi

What specific features will the “ultra-high fidelity vocal models” offer:

SoundLabs has developed MicDrop, a cutting-edge AI vocal plug-in that allows artists to transform their voices in various ways, including:

  • Voice-to-voice transformations
  • Voice-to-instrument conversions
  • Speech-to-singing capabilities
  • Language transposition

With MicDrop, artists can create ultra-high fidelity vocal models using their own voice data for training while retaining full ownership and artistic control over the output.

Voice-to-Voice transformations:

Jon Bon Jovi performs on stage under dramatic lighting. The lead singer holds a microphone stand, striking a pose, while the keyboardist, guitarist, and drummer play their instruments in the background.

Artists will be able to transform their own voices into different voices or vocal styles using AI technology. This could allow an artist to explore new vocal personas or interpretations of their existing material.

With the voice-to-voice transformation capabilities, Bon Jovi could experiment with different vocal styles and personas, pushing the boundaries of their signature sound.

Voice-to-instrument conversions:

The vocal models can convert an artist’s voice into various instrument sounds, essentially using their vocals as the source to synthesize instrumental parts like guitars, drums, etc. This expands the creative possibilities for artists in music production.

The voice-to-instrument conversion could enable Jon’s vocals to be synthesized into various instrumental parts, blurring the lines between his voice and the band’s instrumentation.

Speech-to-singing capabilities:

The AI can transform spoken words or rap vocals into sung vocals, enabling artists to create vocal melodies and harmonies from speech or rhythmic delivery.

The speech-to-singing feature could allow Bon Jovi to create intricate vocal melodies and harmonies from his spoken words, adding a fresh dimension to their songwriting process.

Language transposition:

A key feature is the ability to transpose an artist’s vocals into different languages while maintaining their original vocal quality and characteristics. This could allow artists to release music globally without the need for multilingual recordings.

Vocal Transformations:

The models offer a wide range of other vocal effects and transformations that were previously impossible or extremely difficult to achieve, such as adjusting vocal timbre, pitch, and other qualities.

The core idea is to provide UMG artists with an “AI voice assistant” that can realistically recreate, manipulate, and augment their vocals in unprecedented ways while ensuring full artistic control and ownership over the results. Both UMG and SoundLabs emphasize using this technology ethically as a creative tool to amplify human artistry rather than replace it.

So, could Jon Bon Jovi really use AI as an assistant?

Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora perform on stage with electric and acoustic guitars, smiling and pointing. The background features a red-lit structure, creating a dynamic and energetic atmosphere.

Jon Bon Jovi’s distinct raspy vocals have been a defining element of the band’s signature sound for over four decades. While the AI vocal modeling technology offers intriguing creative possibilities, it’s hard to imagine Bon Jovi fully embracing AI-generated vocals for an entire album.

Their music has always felt authentic and true to their roots, forging a deep connection with fans. That said, the band has never shied away from experimentation. On their 2020 album “2020,” they incorporated elements of hip-hop and electronic music, pushing their sound in new directions.

So, while a fully AI-voiced Bon Jovi album seems unlikely, the band might be open to selectively using the technology as a creative tool, perhaps for vocal effects, harmonies, or even experimenting with Jon’s voice in different styles or languages.

Ultimately, if Bon Jovi were to leverage AI vocals, it would have to be under Jon’s close guidance and control, ensuring that the essence of his iconic voice remains intact. The technology could potentially extend the longevity of his vocals, but any implementation would need to feel authentic and true to the band’s artistic vision and their enduring legacy.

Ethical and responsible AI use

Both UMG and SoundLabs emphasize the importance of ethical and responsible AI use in music creation. They aim to ensure that AI technology is used to enhance and amplify human creativity while respecting artists’ rights and intellectual property.

UMG has previously published the Principles for Music Creation with AI, advocating for transparency, equity, and community involvement in the use of AI for music production, composition, and songwriting.

Exclusive access for UMG artists:

Under this agreement, UMG artists and producers will have exclusive access to create custom vocal models using MicDrop. These models will be available only for their creative use cases and will not be accessible to the general public.

Quotes from key figures:

BT, the founder of SoundLabs, stated, “We believe the future of music creation is decidedly human. Artificial intelligence, when used ethically and trained consensually, has the Promethean ability to unlock unimaginable new creative insights, diminish friction in the creative process and democratize creativity for artists, fans, and creators of all stripes.”

Chris Horton, SVP of Strategic Technology at UMG, said, “UMG strives to keep artists at the center of our AI strategy, so that technology is used in service of artistry, rather than the other way around. We are thrilled to be working with SoundLabs and BT, who has a deep and personal understanding of both the technical and ethical issues related to AI.”

Potential challenges Universal Music & Soundlabs might face with AI

While the partnership between Universal Music Group (UMG) and SoundLabs to offer AI vocal modeling technology holds exciting creative possibilities, there are also potential challenges they may face:

Ethical concerns:

  1. Ensuring the ethical and consensual use of artists’ voice data for training AI models. There are valid concerns about exploitation and lack of control over how voices are used.
  2. Preventing unauthorized or deepfake-style misuse of AI-generated vocals that could harm artists’ reputations or violate their rights.

Legal and copyright Issues:

  1. Navigating complex legal and copyright landscapes surrounding AI-generated content, particularly when training data involves copyrighted works.
  2. Establishing clear ownership and control over the AI vocal models and their outputs to protect artists’ intellectual property rights.

Technological limitations:

  1. Overcoming technical limitations in accurately replicating nuanced vocal qualities, emotional expression, and creative intent of human performers.
  2. Ensuring the AI models can adapt to evolving vocal styles and techniques as artists’ voices change over time.

Artistic integrity:

  1. Addressing concerns from some artists and fans who may view AI-generated vocals as compromising artistic authenticity or undermining human creativity.
  2. Striking the right balance between using AI as a creative tool to enhance artistry versus relying too heavily on AI-generated content.

UMG and SoundLabs have emphasized their commitment to ethical and responsible AI use, respecting artists’ rights, and keeping human creativity at the forefront.

However, navigating these challenges will be crucial for the successful and widely accepted adoption of this technology in the music industry.
